Meet Skye From Rescue to Support: Our k9 wellness ambassador

In February 2025, we welcomed a new face (and a lot of spots!) into the Bishop’s Mission family—Skye, a beautiful Dalmatian with a gentle soul and a heart full of purpose.

Skye was adopted through Dalmatian Rescue of Colorado and has already proven herself to be an incredible addition to our mission. While she’s still in training, she’s showing every sign of becoming a powerful asset in our peer support and Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) work with first responders.

Sweet, smart, and incredibly intuitive, Skye fits right in alongside Bishop, our founding K9 team member. The two are already forming a strong bond, and we’re confident Skye will grow into her role with the same compassion and steadiness Bishop is known for.

As she continues her training, Skye will begin working side by side with our team, helping to bring calm, comfort, and healing to those who serve. Her future is bright—and it’s just getting started.

When the Mission Changes, But the Purpose Remains

When I brought Skye home in February 2025, I had a plan.

Like many handlers, I envisioned the future before it ever arrived. I saw station visits, peer support events, community outreach, wellness programs, and a working partnership alongside Bishop. I imagined the role she would play in helping support first responders, veterans, and the communities we serve through Bishop's Mission.

What I didn't know was that Skye had a different mission in mind.

In March 2026, our world changed.

Without warning, Skye experienced her first neurological episode. Then a second, and each time so severe we needed emergency intervention. The last episode, I had to ponder the hardest question when asked “do you want a DNR?” Then came specialist appointments, medication trials, difficult decisions, sleepless nights, and countless questions that often seemed to have no clear answers. She was diagnosed with ideopathic epilepsy, meaning we don’t know what is causing the seizures.

Anyone who has cared for a dog with a chronic medical condition understands the emotional roller coaster that follows. There are moments of fear, frustration, uncertainty, and heartbreak. There are also moments when you realize how strong these dogs truly are.

Throughout every challenge, Skye continued to be Skye.

She still wanted to play. She still wanted to learn. She still wanted to be part of the team.

The difference was that her role was changing.

As I stepped back and looked at everything we had experienced together, I realized something important.

Because of Skye, Bishop's Mission began having conversations we had never planned to have.

Conversations about canine wellness.

Conversations about seizure awareness.

Conversations about emergency preparedness for working dog handlers.

Conversations about medication costs, specialist care, quality of life, and what happens when a dog develops a medical condition that changes the path you originally envisioned.

Most importantly, conversations about the fact that a dog's value is never determined by what they can do.

A dog's value comes from who they are.

Skye reminded me that purpose doesn't disappear simply because circumstances change.

Instead of becoming the working partner I originally envisioned, she became something equally important.

She became an ambassador.

Today, Skye serves as the inspiration behind Bishop's Mission's growing focus on K9 wellness and resilience. Her journey continues to shape our educational efforts, our future K9 Wellness Program, and our commitment to helping handlers better understand the challenges many dogs face.

She reminds us that wellness is not just about performance.

It's about quality of life.

It's about prevention, education, support, and being prepared for the unexpected.

Most of all, it's about ensuring that the dogs who give so much to us receive the same level of care and support in return.

Every dog has a purpose.

Sometimes that purpose simply looks different than we originally imagined.

For Skye, her purpose may not be leading the mission.

It may be helping us build a better one.

And because of her, countless dogs and handlers may benefit from the lessons she continues to teach us every day.
